Eddie Rickenbacker Medal of Honor

Eddie Rickenbacker, the top American ace of World War I with 26 kills, earned the Medal of Honor for his actions on this day 105 years ago, when he attacked seven German planes, shooting down two of them. Originally a Distinguished Service Cross, the award was upgraded to the Medal of Honor in 1930.

Congress passed the Bill of Rights and sent it to the states for ratification on this date, 234 years ago.  The Bill of Rights clearly guarantees personal rights and freedoms, and puts specific limits on federal power. James Madison was largely responsible for the Bill of Rights.  

Joseph Schaefer Medal of Honor

Platoon Sergeant Joseph Schaefer led his squad in defense against a ferocious German attack, taking the most exposed potion and capturing ten Germans himself. Jimmy Doolittle became the first pilot to take off, fly and then land on instruments alone. Doolittle was a pioneering pilot and aviation engineer who led the Tokyo Raid in 1942 and earned the Medal of Honor. 

Ernest Childers Medal of Honor

Ernest Childers, a Creek Indian from Oklahoma, single-handedly killed two snipers, destroyed two machine gun nests and captured a fire support observer while with the 45th Division in Italy 80 years ago. Childers received the Medal of Honor seven months later.

JOHN TOWLE Medal of Honor

John Towle jumped into the crossfire at Nijmegen Bridge during Operation: Market Garden, to fire his rocket launcher at German tanks, causing them to withdraw, and a fortified house, killing nine enemy. He was killed by a mortar round moments later, and he received the Medal of Honor posthumously. Tell his story and remember his courage
