John Dury New, a Marine fighting on Peleliu, earned the Medal of Honor for his heroic sacrifice, when he smothered a Japanese grenade to save the lives of his fellow Marines. Fighting with 1^st Battalion, 7^th Marines, he had served in the Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester campaigns. The City of Mobile, Alabama, his hometown, named its Medal of Honor Park in his memory.
