LEAVE THE GRENADES

Twenty feet away, Vandervoort watches his battalion board.
He sees Turnbull look at something on the tarmac and then walk away, hurrying to catch his paratroopers.
"I wonder what that was about?" Vandervoort thinks.
Though in a hurry too, Vandervoort gets angry when he sees the loose Gammon grenades.

"I issued orders to carry them but I guess Lieutenant Turnbull thinks he is above that."
Vandervoort has bigger issues at hand so he shrugs off the incident. But the next morning, in France, Vandervoort needs a leader to get a tough job done.
Someone suggests Turnbull, but Vandervoort picks another man, thinking, "I just don't trust Turnbull for some reason."
You will see later that Vandervoort's faith in Turnbull had tremendous consequences.
For this version of the story, all we can say is that Turnbull himself dies later in the chaos of St. Mere-Eglise when a German counter-attack from the north overruns the town.
