MISSION FAILURE - SHOOT
Turnbull smoothly brings his weapon up, braces the stock against his shoulder, and squints down the barrel.
He lines his sites up and squeezes the trigger on the pause between breaths.
The shapes shudder, stagger and flop to the ground. Then the hedgerows echoes with a low, primal moan.
This cry dies away but Turnbull knows instantly that he was too quick to fire. He has shot a cow.
"You killed Bessie," Turner thinks as the animal cries again. "That was stupid."
Turnbull stands over the dead cow. It's a dumb mistake that suddenly gets worse. From off to his right, comes the buzzing, ripping sound of a German Mg42 machine gun.
Though he dives down, bullets tear into him. Turner's world fades to black.
