AT THE RALLY POINT

Image
The sun dawns red and orange streaks through the clouds. Ben Vandervoort, the  battalion commander, looks to see Turnbull's squad enter the battalion rally point. He waves the Lieutenant over.
Vandeervoort had a rough parachute jump and a tough night. He sprained his ankle when landing and hobbled to the rally point using his M-1 as a crutch.
His battalion, though, had one of the night's best jumps and Vandervoort has 500 paratroopers assembled.
Vandy likes Turnbull. "Good to see you on the ground and in one piece, Lieutenant."
"You too, sir."
"We're stepping off for Neuville," Vandervoort tells Turnbull, "so have your platoon ready to go. Any questions?"
Just then tremendous explosions sound to the east. The paratroopers glance at their watches.
It's 0610 and 293 B-26 Marauders, medium weight bombers, begin bombing Utah Beach, dropping over 4,000 bombs on the Germans.
