January 11 James Howard Medal of Honor

James Howard, who was the only American pilot to earn the Medal of Honor over Europe in World War II. On January 11, 1944, he showed incredible leadership when he attacked over 30 German fighter in order to defending a flight of B-17 bombers. 

Howard shot down up to six Germans that day and continued to engage the enemy even after he ran out of ammunition, swooping in simulated attacks to disrupt the German formations.

Before Howard commanded his squadron over Europe, he had flown as a Flying Tiger over China, where he had six confirmed Japanese kills. Howard was the only double-ace of the War.

Born in Canton China, Howard grew up St Louis and attended John Boroughs High School. After the War, he started an engineering company and became a Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserve. In 1991, he published his autobiography, Roar Of The Tiger

Howard died in 1995 and is buried at Arlington Cemetery.
