January 12 Alexander Nininger Medal of Honor

Alexander Nininger earned the Medal of Honor posthumously for his leadership during the defense of Bataan in the Philippines in the early days of World War II. He was the first American soldier to earn the MOH in the War. Honor and remember him!

Nininger led a one man charge into the heart of a Japanese attack, knocking Japanese snipers out of trees with well aimed shoots and tossing grenades to eliminate Japanese defensive positions. He was wounded thrice but kept fighting. He was cut down, and when his body was recovered it was surrounded by enemy soldiers he had killed.

Nininger was just 23 years old and was known for his quiet demeanor and love for drawing. A Georgia native, he graduated from West Point in June 1941 and his remains now lie at the Church Cemetery in Abucay, Luzon. Honor and remember this great American!
