Battle of Pork Chop Hill on this day in 1953, between United Nations forces and Chinese Communists. 11386  Americans were casualties of the battle, as were, by some estimates, 3500 Chinese Communist troops killed or wounded.

The battle was widely criticized in the United States, as it was seen as waste of American lives traded for useless real estate and no strategic advantage. 

A 1959 movie about the battle starred Gregory Peck as First Lieutenant Jospeh Clemons, the  relieving company commander who led his troops back up the to retake the hill from the Chinese Communist forces. Clemons received the Silver Star for his leadership.

The battle in April 1953 was actually only the first of two battle fought on the Hill. The United Nations won the first engagement, but the Chinese retook the Hill in July 1953. Three weeks later, the warring parties signed the Korean Armistice.
