Richard McCool earned the Medal of Honor while commanding a Landing Craft Support ship off of Okinawa, when he helped rescue survivors of the kamikaze-stricken USS Willian D Porter and then successfully led his own ship, despite severe wounds, when it was hit by a kamikaze as well on the following day.
