August 1 John Kane Medal of Honor

John Kane, an Army-Air Force colonel and bomber commander, received the Medal of Honor for his leadership during Operation: Tidal Wave, an attack on Romanian oil refineries.

Kane led his bombers on to their target despite the fact that the enemy anti-aircraft gunners had been warned of their approach. He lingered over the target until all of his bombers got through, and his plane, “Hail Columbia!” had lost an engine and been hit twenty times during the mission.

Kane also received the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross during the War. He fought in the Mediterranean and in Europe. After the War, he stayed in the Air Force until retiring in 1954. Read his Medal of Honor citation and, and honor and remember John Kane.
