Honor and remember John Basilone, the Marine’s Marine, who earned the Medal of Honor for actions this day at Guadalcanal.
From the night of October 4, 1942, Basilone until October 26, 1942, Basilone resolutely defended against a Japanese attack by the Sendai Division at Henderson Field, keeping two heavy automatic guns in the fight, cutting back through enemy infested supply lines to get ammunition and fighting with pistol and machine gun.
After touring the United States on a War Bond drive, Basilone volunteered to lead Marines again. He was killed in action on Iwo Jima and earned the Navy Cross posthumously.
