January 1 Paul Revere Born

The great Paul Revere, an immortal American, was born on this day in 1735. An original Son of Liberty, Revere organized an intelligence and alarm system to alert the patriots of British troops activity.

Of course, on April 18-19, 1775, he and two other men rode throughout the countryside to alert colonial troops to the approach of British troops, before the Battle of Lexington & Concord.

Revere was an entrepreneur with a technical mind. He was a silversmith, but his capabilities were significant. After Lexington, Revere was sent by Congress to develop a powder mills in Canton, MA.

Revere then served as a Major in the Massachusetts military at Castle William, in Boston Harbor. He also took part in a disastrous expedition to Penobscot, Maine, for which he was unfairly blamed.

Revere was close friends with Joseph Warren, the ardent patriot leader who was killed at Bunker Hill. Revere recovered and buried Warren’s body after the British left Boston, which had been dumped in a mass grave. Revere recognized Warren’s body because he had attached a tooth for Warren year’s earlier. Revere named one of his sons for Warren, too.

After the War, Revere returned to business, and he expanded operations, developing early industrial practices that let him manufacture household goods on a larger scale. The Revere Copper Company is still in business today: https://reverecopper.com

For a great start to the New Year, honor and remember Paul Revere! (Say it aloud. It rhymes!)
