David Ouellet earned the Medal of Honor posthumously in Vietnam, when he smothered a Viet Cong grenade with his body to save the lives of his fellow sailors. Honor and remember him!
Ouellet, from Massachusetts, served with Assault Craft Division 12 for five months in Vietnam, and then trained with river boats in San Diego, before returning to serve with River Squadron Five. While on patrol, a Viet Cong tossed a grenade into his boat. Ouellet yelled for his crew to take cover and pushed the boat captain down a hatch to safety, before putting himself between his crew and the grenade, purposely absorbing the explosion.
Ouellet had previously earned the Bronze Star. He is buried in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and his name is on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on panel 16E, Row 030.
