Walter Wetzel earned the Medal of Honor posthumously on this day in Germany, when he alerted and rallied his fellow soldiers to an impending attack, and then threw himself on a German grenade to save his buddies lives. We should honor and remember him today.
Wetzel was part of the 8th Infantry Division, which had fought from Normandy through to the Ruhr. Two other soldiers in the division, Ernest Prussman and John Minick, earned the Medal of Honor during the War.
Wetzel joined the Army from Roseville, Michigan andl is buried at The Netherlands American Cemetery. He was 26 years old when he was killed in action. Honor and remember him.
