Leonard Mason, USMC, received the Medal of Honor for his heroic leadership during the liberation of Guam. Mason single-handedly reduced a Japanese defensive position, freeing pinned down Marines to move forward.

Parenthetically, I was amazed to learn that pith helmets were still a uniform items for Marine officers in 1984! This photo is from a memorial dedication to the Marines who earned Medals of Honor, including Mason, at Guam which took place in 1984.
