William Thompson earned the Medal of Honor posthumously for his bravery and self-sacrifice while defending the Pusan perimeter in the early days of the Korean War.

Despite being badly wounded, Thompson refused to evacuate, instead manning his machine-gun to cover the withdrawal of his fellow soldiers.
