June 19 Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France to the United States, arrived in New York City on this day. Meant to commemorate the Franco-American alliance during the Revolution, the 151 foot statue was assembled five months later, in a dedication overseen by President Grover Cleveland.

Jay Zeamer and Joseph Sarnoksi earned the Medal of Honor on this day and the rest of their B-17 crew, Old 666, earned the Distinguished Service Cross, when they flew straight and level for 22 minutes to map Bouganville, in preparation for the planned invasion later that year. Gunnery Sergeant Robert McCard earned the Medal of Honor posthumously on this day at Spain when he exposed himself to Japanese fire to cover his Marines withdrawal from a damaged tank. Honor and remember him!

OSS formed on this day. Honor and remember all those who lost their lives in service to the nation.

June 10 Robert Cole Medal of Honor

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Cole earned the Medal of Honor at Carentan in Normandy, when he rallied his paratroopers and led a bayonet charge that overwhelmed the Germans. Sadly, he was killed in action in September during Operation: Market Garden. Honor and remember him!
